I seem, no matter how hard I try, to have a lot of plastic bags in the house.  I always take my own bags to the shops but I still end up with bags from packaging.

How can I reduce the amount of plastic bags I have or at least use them in different ways to reduce waste?

We use any shopping bags as bin liners.  Also we use the bags bread comes in as bin liners.

A cardboard milk carton serves pretty well as a bin as well.  You can force down quite a bit if you are prepared to compress is with your hand or fist.

We go to the butchers and get our meat there because it's not on a plastic tray wrapped in plastic.

The real problem is finding things that are not wrapped in plastic.  Everything seems to be these days.

Here's a couple of things I do;

  • Get your unpackaged meat from a butcher.
  • Buy your bread from a bakery
  • Buy vegetables that are not in plastic
  • Don't buy milk in plastic containers
  • Buy cheese from a farmers market where it's not wrapped in plastic

I found that just by doing these few simple things the amount of collected plastic was reduced amazingly.

I agree with Judy that it's very difficult to find food that's not wrapped in plastic.  Like cheese.

Another thing we do with our plastic bags is pick up our dogs poo and use them to wrap our baby's dirty nappies.  If you have a friend with a small baby, she will need at least 4 plastic bags a day so you could give them to her.
